Substitute Teacher Faces Jail Time Over Spyware

A substitute teacher in Connecticut has been convicted for viewing pornography in the presence of minors.  Julie Amero, 40, was substituting for a seventh grade class when pornographic ads began popping-up on the classroom computer.  As she clicked to close one pop-up, more would follow.  A computer expert claiming the computer was loaded with spyware, was not allowed to testify on the matter.  Further investigations after sentencing, found the school's web filter and anti-virus software to be out-dated.  Mrs. Amero was sentenced by jury to 40 years in prison.  Many experts have been willing to help with her appeal.
This is another case that shows how important it is to keep Anti-virus and internet filter definitions updated.  It is also important for the public to understand how spyware gets onto computers, how to detect it and have it removed.  After Microsoft's study back in 2005 called the HoneyNet Project, it was estimated that more than one million computers have been compromised, or are under the control of a hacker, either stealing information, transmitting SPAM, or sending Denial of Service Attacks.  Home computers are especially vulnerable because many Windows user's use unrestricted accounts, allowing programs to install automatically without the user's permission.

    Online Blog Safety

NTV News did a story last Tuesday dealing with the possible dangers of Internet blogs.  Popular websites like MySpace.com allow the user to create a profile and enter any information they want about themselves, including pictures.  Children and teens may not realize how easily they can be targeted if their profiles give out very specific information on where they live and what they look like.  The article explains that parents should ask their children to see their profiles and explain the danger of putting too much personal information online.  Putting the family computer in an open area and using filtering software are also recommended.

Yahoo! clamps down on preditory chat
After yahoo banned all chatrooms in June, it has now agreed to remove user-created chatrooms with sexually explicit names.  They will also make it easier for users to report inappropriate conduct and will alert users that their IP addresses are being monitored.
Yahoo! chatrooms were closed this summer after investigations, by New York and Nebraska state attorney generals, found that minors could gain access to adult chatrooms.

A message to Southern Valley Parents:

    Greetings!

With parent teacher conferences starting this week, I feel this is a good time to spread the awarness of the i-Safe program.  There are many things that parents should know about what their children can be exposed to on the Internet.  At the Parent Teacher Conferences held on Friday morning 8-12, I will be playing a short video provided by the Nebraska Attorney General, John Bruning.  I will have handouts and will also be demonstrating the resources available to parents, such as the Nebraska Sex Offender Registry.  I should be setup near the main entrance to the High school.  I hope you will be able to stop by as you meet with your child's teachers.

Thank You,
Jared Fausch
Technology Coordinator
